partners, or better yet, to integrate NGV
capabilities into their assembly lines.
More fueling infrastructure clearly would
help, and one can only hope that someone
will be successful in developing a costeffective plug-in, natural gas home appliance for overnight refueling to convince
the general public to seriously consider
buying NGVs.
The potential across North America
can be estimated by extrapolating from
the robust Salt Lake City-area market.
An estimated 10,000 NGVs there are
spread among a population of 2 million
people. Given that the population of the
United States and Canada is 150 times
as large, that translates to 1.5 million
light duty NGVs across North America,
which is not a bad launching point, even
if it represents less than 1 percent of the
automobile population.
Once the fueling companies and au-
tomobile makers get serious, it's not outrageous to expect the market to grow to
multiples of this.
The natural gas fuels market will not
experience straight-line growth. Additional
technology and market developments that
