“We ended up staying up all night talking,” says julie. “We had a grand old time.” After heading back to Sacramento with their respective caravans (they texted each other the whole way), they set up a first date. By Christmas they were seeing each other exclusively. In May of 2007, the couple took a trip to new York for Paul’s cousin’s wedding. What julie didn’t know is that Paul intended to propose to her…on top of the Empire State Building. However, things didn’t exactly go as planned. “It was super crowded and cold and took three hours to get to the top,” says julie. “I got all tired and cranky.” Sensing this might not be the most romantic spot after all, Paul ditched the idea, and took julie to a café to regroup. After a glass of wine, Paul buried his nose in a tour book for several minutes. “I was a little irritated since I felt that he was ignoring me,” she admits. “little did I know that he was trying to find a new place to propose.” He found that location in Central Park near the beautiful Bethesda fountain. On bended knee he pulled out a ring and popped the question. “My eyes welled up with tears and I don’t even think I verbally said yes,” says julie. Paul even managed to have the ring sized and ordered from Israel without her even knowing about it. “He picked it out all on his own and it is perfect!” julie and Paul, both roman Catholics, knew they wanted a full mass for their ceremony. julie’s maternal grandmother and parents were married at St. Francis of Assisi in Sacramento. It only made sense that they be the third generation to exchange vows there. “the ceremony was long and God was definitely present,” notes julie. Both julie and Paul planned a memorable reception with family and friends. Guests were treated to a three-tired cake with three different flavors: chocolate with raspberry, carrot with pumpkin cream cheese, and lemon poppy seed with lemon curd. the entire cake was covered in off-white fondant with a gold crisscrossing drape. As Paul is running for the 10th District Assembly, the newlyweds were only able to sneak away for a couple days to the Monarch Cove Bed and Breakfast in Capitola. there they enjoyed a private carriage house overlooking the ocean.
