RECEPTION DINNER OPTIONS Who knew there could be so many choices when it comes to how food is served at a wedding? Here’s a summary of your options to help guide your dining desires. Plated: A served meal is very elegant but can also be very involved. Remember to identify the menu options in your invitations and have your guests indicate their selections in their response cards. It’s important to keep track of these selections because you will need to inform your caterer of how many are having which entrée (remember to number the back of the response cards with the appropriate names so that in case your guests don't fill in their name, you'll know who they are!). You will also need to create a system to help the servers know which entrée to serve to which guest. The easiest way to do this is with color-coded place cards. Buffet: Buffets are great because they require little work from the bride, and they can sometimes be less expensive than a plated meal. However, this is not always the case as you will likely give your guests multiple entrée choices; caterers will need to over prepare for the additional need. If you go for a buttet service, guide your guests through the line by designating one song for each table; when that song plays it’s time for that table to enter the buffet line. This is a unique way to prevent cattle call chaos. Family Style: Can’t decide between plated and buffet? A family style meal is the best of both worlds. Your guests get to enjoy creating their own portions by serving themselves like a buffet and they get to stay seated like a plated meal. Beware of overcrowded tables; keep your centerpieces small and seat less people at each table. Hors d’oeuvres Only: Tray passed hors d’oeuvres or table-placed hors d’oeuvres are another great idea. However, they don't always save money. Talk to your caterer about options, and price hors d'oeuvres options against a full meal option. If you choose to serve hor d'oeuvres only, be sure to time your reception carefully, so that wedding guests will not expect a full meal.
