Jobs and Careers Autumn 2017 - 2
SEA IS FOR
Do you think you have what it takes to help keep
our country's coastline a safe place for everyone?
he Maritime and Coastguard
Agency (MCA) is intent
on becoming the world's
best maritime safety organisation
combining prevention, enforcement
and emergency response with support
for the whole maritime industry.
As a government agency, the MCA
needs to have skilled staff who deliver
outstanding results. Career opportunities
range from working as a coastguard to
visiting ships as a marine surveyor, as well
as many other roles behind the scenes.
Besides the rewarding nature of the jobs
themselves, the benefits that come with
them are excellent. They include generous
holiday entitlement and pension options,
flexible working and other policies to
enable a good work/life balance, including
beneficial childcare arrangements.
You'll also benefit from the MCA's
commitment to developing talent.
Foundation of success
The MCA puts great value on the benefits
of a diverse workforce. Organisations
work better when everyone in them
feels valued for who they are and what
they can contribute. Being an inclusive
organisation is not an optional extra
- it is the foundation of success.
That is why being inclusive is important
to the MCA and why it believes its shared
corporate values of respect and trust
shouldn't be just words but should actually
describe how we do things - treating
everyone fairly and with dignity, and

valuing their contribution based on their
personal background and life experiences.
The MCA has three Inclusion Champions
who are members of the senior leadership
team and are well-placed to drive and
speed up the pace of behavioural and
cultural change. Each Inclusion Champion
takes personal responsibility for supporting
a particular area of responsibility and
improving diversity across the MCA.
These Inclusion Champions support
the MCA's commitment to promoting
good practice on equality and diversity in
employment, and certain aspects of service
delivery. Gareth Jones is the Inclusion
Champion for Disability and believes the
agency is positive in promoting equal
opportunities and providing reasonable
adjustments, where required, to support its
employees in achieving their full potential.
Every second counts
There couldn't be a more exciting time
to join Her Majesty's Coastguard. This
emergency service has recently gone
through a major modernisation programme
and is looking to recruit those who
want to play a key role in the delivery of
maritime safety and search and rescue.
In an emergency every second
counts, so there's a network of rescue
professionals all around the UK coast.
Coastguard coordinators ensure the right
rescue resources are sent to an incident;
while coastguard rescue teams, lifeboats
and rescue helicopters are all ready to
respond at all times, day or night.
