EXERCISE TRENDS ▲ REDUCES IMPACT ON JOINTS NORDIC walking 10 MINUTES OF BOUNCING IS 69% MORE EFFICIENT THAN JOGGING RELEASE STRESS FROM LOWER BACK WITH AERIAL YOGA An exercise to enjoy in the great British outdoors is Nordic walking. Based on a summer training regime for skiers, it uses specially designed poles to propel walkers forward with each step through their upper body strength. It burns up to 46% more calories than a normal stroll and reduces the impact on joints by softening each step. This is a great full-body exercise and one to do with friends, groups and at organised walking events. POLE POSITION Nordic walking poles cost around £30, and lessons are recommended at first to master the technique. It combines yoga principles such as stretching and meditation with gymnastics and aerial arts. Instructor Svetlana Abela explains the benefits: 'Postures that require the yogi to be upside down are enhanced by being suspended. These exercises release stress and tension from the lower back and have benefits for the nervous system. 'It helps if you've already done a little yoga before you try the aerial version, but anyone can participate whatever their fitness level.' HANG TOUGH Many yoga studios now offer aerial classes.
