It's good for children to
have activities beyond the
school gates. Aside from giving
them a chance to unwind and
nurture their interests, extracurricular activities challenge
children, build confidence and
boost cognitive power, which
improves academic learning.
Occupying youngsters once
they're in secondary school isn't
easy. Joining a club offers them
a chance to develop friendships
and new skills. Army Cadets does
this and more, with opportunities
to participate in expeditions, as
well as learn first aid, navigation
and music. Plus, complete the
Duke of Edinburgh award - great
for university personal statement.

IT'S GOOD
TO TALK

Children thrive on interaction,
so the more you talk to them, the
better it is. Narrate what you are doing
and make sounds for things you do,
too. Even if they don't understand
what you are saying just yet, their
brain will still be processing the noises
and words you make.
As children get older, discuss
situations, explain things and ask lots
of questions. This will push them to
think about the response.
But make sure you listen properly
- children will mimic adults'
behaviour, so how you communicate
will be passed on to them.

DITCH THE
JUNK FOOD

Providing the right
nutrients for your child is
essential. Replace sugary foods
and junk meals with healthier
options to give them the right
fuel to learn to the best of their
ability. For example, kids need
iron for brain development,
while protein helps with
thinking and alertness, and
keeps them energetic.
A good night's sleep
is also vital. It allows children
the chance to rest and process
what they have learned during
the day and ensures they
are ready to get going when
they wake up.

GET
PHYSICAL

Exercise makes
children physically
as well as mentally
stronger. Moving around
increases the flow of
blood to the brain,
which builds new brain
cells, making it easier for
them to learn more and
for longer periods.
Being involved in
organised sports can
also help to teach
teamwork, leadership
and build confidence.

Allowing your child to see
the real world in day-to-day life
will help them to be more savvy
as an adult. Perhaps getting them
to add up your shopping bill so they
understand how much things cost and
teach them to wash, clean and cook.
Open up a bank account for them,
too, so they start to appreciate money.
As they get older, get them doing
chores to give them a sense of
responsibility. Pets are a great way to
build empathy and teach them to look
after other living things. Also, provide
your child with experiences and these
will help stimulate their curiosity.

PRAISE BE

Children respond well when
they are praised for their
efforts. Regardless of winning, losing,
understanding and intelligence, if
your child is making considerable
efforts then you should recognise that.
It will give them the confidence
to continue trying and will also help
them to deal with failures.
