Cottage holidays

Since 2000, Bun has been running Menai
Holiday Cottages, which was established
35 years ago and has grown from 30
to over 300 carefully-chosen cottages,
covering Anglesey, Snowdonia and the
Llyn Peninsula. With two main ofﬁces
and three micro ofﬁces, the company
employs a team of 26 people who all
play their part in offering superb service
to their customers.
Bun's other pride and joy is The
Outbuildings, a restaurant-with-rooms
on Anglesey with glorious views of
Snowdonia. 'This project was set up to
offer a comfy home-from-home bed and
breakfast, as well as a much-needed
venue in the area
for special
celebrations
such as private
parties and
small weddings,'
says Bun. 
Converted from
a barn and granary,
The Outbuildings is
set in farmland, just
a few minutes drive
from Llanddwyn beach. The dining room
opens on to the garden and has hosted
weddings, Christenings, birthdays,
anniversaries and business meetings.
There are four en-suite bedrooms - each
one has been decorated by Bun, with
vibrant colours, lovely china and local
art. The quirkily-named rooms, such as
The Pink Spotty Jug and The Button
Room, have the comﬁest beds and
prettiest bed linen.' 
In the garden is the ﬁfth bedroom,
a cosy - and very pink - shepherd's hut
with a small wood-burning stove and

en-suite shower room. Fans of the TV
show Best Walks with a View may well
have seen its presenter, Julia Bradbury,
popping out of it in the latest series.

Art and adventure

Looking for a new and unique way to
bring people to Anglesey, Bun had a
grand idea while on holiday on Tresco
Island, Scilly Isles, in 2014, when she
spotted an outdoor art installation by
Bristol artist Anthony Garratt.  
Last year, Menai Holiday Cottages
sponsored Four on Anglesey, a series
of open-air canvas portraits of the
island, painted by Anthony and left on
display for all to enjoy. Each captured a
coastal view from
the four corners
of this rich and
varied island.
It was such a
success that Bun
has sponsored
Anthony again,
in Wales' Year
of Adventure,
to paint two
more gigantic
canvases, this time in Snowdonia.
To see the High and Low exhibition,
you'll need to put on your walking boots
- one, a double-sided painting, has been
ﬂoated in the middle of mountain lake
Llyn Llydaw; the other is underground,
at Llechwedd, a former slate mine.  
'There's a lot of active things to do in
North Wales, but sometimes you need
to just stop and stare to appreciate
your surroundings,' says Bun. 'Anthony's
work helps you to do that.'
So what's next? 'Now that would be
telling,' says Bun. 'All I can say is that
Menai Holiday Cottages is not your
average holiday company.'
